Carolina Beach | Bill Carlson of Cape Fear Divers, taking a moment away from making some repairs on the dive boat Hawksbill Friday morning, shook his head when asked how important a navigable Carolina Beach Inlet is to the economy of this coastal town.

“Everything in this harbor is dependent on it,” he said, motioning up and down the docks to the commercial, charter and diving boats tied up in the town’s Yacht Basin. “We gotta have it to keep a lot of the jobs and the tourists that come to Carolina Beach.”

Last week, a House committee earmarked nearly $18.5 million in the upcoming 2009 federal budget for coastal infrastructure projects in Southeastern North Carolina.

Although just the first step in the long, often-convoluted process of coming up with a federal budget, it was an important move in the right direction, said U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre, D-N.C.

Wrightsville Beach bridges in need of repair

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) has determined that three bridges in Wrightsville Beach — the Heide Trask drawbridge and both bridges over Banks Channel — are in need of repair.

Division engineer Allen Pope said questions about the bridges stemmed from the discussion of problems with the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.

70-foot vessel catches fire

The Beaufort Fire Department responded to a call at the town docks Saturday around 4:30 p.m. to exstinguish a 70-foot powerboat that caught fire.

The motor vessel Samara was using side jets to go into mooring at the end of a finger dock in front of the Dock House Restaurant when the flame started.

Memorial Day ceremonies in Wilmington

On Memorial Day we pause to remember the military men and women who have died serving our country.

Governor Mike Easley has ordered all state flags be flown at half staff in honor of Memorial Day. Monday morning, Wilmington held an annual observance at the National Cemetery on Market Street.

Stewart's slip opens door for Kahne repeat

Concord | Tony Stewart suffered his second heartbreaking defeat of the season Sunday night when a flat tire late in the Coca-Cola 600 handed Kasey Kahne the victory in NASCAR's longest race of the year.

Stewart, who lost the season-opening Daytona 500 when he was passed on the last lap by Ryan Newman, had the tire go flat with three laps to go. He was forced to pit, allowing Kahne to zip past him for the victory.
