Zimbabwe's main MDC opposition party says police have raided its Harare HQ, just a day after its presidential candidate announced he was withdrawing from Friday's runoff election due to intimidation by President Mugabe's supporters.
When asked about the reason for the raid, a Mugabe spokesman told CNN it was part of "the ongoing crackdown on lawless elements that have been bringing so much violence" in Zimbabwe.
"The government will act on anyone, anywhere who is thought to be contravening the laws of the country," said George Charamba.
Monday's raid comes a day after Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai said state-sponsored violence against his supporters had made it impossible for him to run.
"A free and fair election is impossible," Morgan Tsvangirai told reporters Sunday. "We in the MDC have resolved that we will no longer participate in this violent, illegitimate ... sham of an election process."

CAIRO (AP) — Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden accused Pope Benedict XVI of helping in a "new Crusade" against Islam and warned in a new audiotape of a "severe" reaction for Europeans' publication of cartoons seen by Muslims as insulting Islam's Prophet Muhammad.
The message raised concerns al-Qaeda was plotting new attacks in Europe.

After hearing from the attorney for Ashley Alexandra Dupre, the maker of "Girls Gone Wild" said the video's Internet release will be delayed.

U.S. Initial Jobless Claims Rose 22,000 to 378,000The number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment insurance rose last week and the total number on benefit rolls reached the highest since August 2004, signs that firings are increasing.
Initial claims for benefits increased 22,000 to 378,000 in the week ended March 15, more than economists forecast and the highest since the week of Jan. 26, from 356,000 the prior week, the Labor Department said in Washington.
